The mission of Bottomless Closet is to promote economic self-sufficiency to economically disadvantaged New York City women by providing interview skills, business clothing and ongoing career development and support programs. By enhancing their self-confidence and self-esteem, we enable them to enter and succeed in the workforce and transform the vision for their lives.
We are driven by a passion to help women help themselves. We first opened our doors in 1999 and serve approximately 1200 women each year. The critical link is our volunteers and staff who have the training and compassion to build a significant relationship with each client and offer her the individual help she needs.
OVERVIEW OF POSITION
The Executive Director provides leadership in assessing and responding to the needs of Bottomless Closet’s target population. S/he directs day-to-day administration, oversees program and service activities and manages an operating budget of $700,000 within the guidelines and policies established by the Board. The Executive Director reports to the President of the Board and receives general supervision from her.
The Executive Director plays a variety of roles within the organization including administrator, program developer, fundraiser, mentor and educator, collaborator and spokesperson. Specific responsibilities include the following:
Board Relations: Builds strong collaborative relationship with Board.
·Prepares and presents monthly reports to the Board;
·Works closely with the President and Board members on operations, service programs, strategic planning, policy development, financial management and fundraising;
· Attends all committee meetings as an ex officio member, providing staff support and assistance as needed.
Development: In collaboration with the Board, ensures that adequate funding is in place to meet organizational needs.
· Takes an active role in identifying and cultivating new funding sources;
· Writes/supervises the development and submission of grant proposals in cooperation with the Development Committee;
· Oversees fundraising activities such as special events, annual and other solicitations.
Community/Public Relations: Increases Bottomless Closet’s visibility within the larger community.
· In cooperation with the President and Board members, represents Bottomless Closet to the broader community, serving as spokesperson at conferences, in public forums and the media;
· Promotes visibility and support through ongoing networking with referral agencies, potential corporate partners and other funding sources;
Programming: Ensures effective and appropriate development and implementation of Bottomless Closet programming.
· Manages all program and service activities, works to improve their quality and develops new programs or services;
· Creates, maintains, and expands a referral agency network in order to expand and improve Bottomless Closet’s services and build collaborative programming;
· Participates in and supports periodic program evaluation activities;
· Oversees orientation and training of volunteers.
Financial: In collaboration with the Board, ensures financial stability.
· Proposes a detailed annual budget to the Board for approval;
· Manages income and expenditures in accordance with the budget;
· With the approval and oversight of the Treasurer and the Finance Committee, maintains a financial system for recording and managing income and day-to-day expenditures;
· Coordinates annual audit and presents results to the Board.
Administrative: Ensures smooth day-to-day operations.
· Hires, supervises and supports staff in accordance with personnel policies;
· Fosters and maintains positive morale and a sense of teamwork among staff;
· Develops and maintains an efficient administrative plan and systems including personnel policies, compensation systems and job descriptions, office systems, website, client and donor records and other computer support;
· Supervises the boutique and manages inventory.
PERSONAL QUALITIES, EXPERIENCE AND CREDENTIALS DESIRED
* 2-3 years relevant experience within a not-for-profit organization or equivalent.
* Proven strength in financial management and fundraising.
* Ability to think strategically and develop and implement operating plans.
* Ability to lead and to foster leadership.
* Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills and the ability to work with diverse perspectives (including Board, volunteer, client, staff).
* Ability to collaborate and build alliances with other organizations.
* Excellent written and verbal skills, including proficiency in grant writing and public speaking.
* Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends.
* Experience with client population, understanding their needs and workforce development desirable.
* Interest in women’s issues, particularly women’s empowerment.
* Attention to detail, ability to follow through, and a “roll up your sleeves” attitude.
